Year 1: marking out

Year 1: the patio

Year 1
During our first summer we marked out the circle from the plan, but didn't dig it out. We wanted to make absolutely sure that it was the right size and in the right place. Here you can also see that the fence got treated. Some old bits of trellis were found in the garden and made good. An extra border was also dug and planted, but not fully shaped. The patio was filled wth chimney pots, a hanging basket and a couple of wall pots to cheer up an other wise dull corner. The £30 B&Q bench was given some extra Hammerite paint and coloured varnish and placed at the end of the garden for the evening sun.
Year 2
All the bits were ordered for the building work after many calculations from the plan measurements. and work started: the lawn was dug up and the earth levelled (over 1 ton of soil was removed in bags through the house); a trench was dug 9" deep for the brick circle foundation; concrete was mixed and poured; the borders were reshaped; foundations were laid for the shed and the cold frame; rope edging was set; and then 125 bricks were laid in a circle.
